Navigating the Hazards of Emerging Chemicals

Emerging chemicals (ECs) present significant risks to Department of Defense (DoD) operations, particularly impacting the safety, reliability, and readiness of weapon systems. To mitigate these risks, the Army has identified a crucial capability gap: the need for comprehensive assessment tools that analyze the impacts of ECs. In response, the Army is developing two key tools: the Erging Chemical Chemical Abstract Service (ECCAS) database and the Defense Analytics for Emerging Chemicals (DAEC) tool. ECCAS is designed to consolidate Army chemical usage data from multiple sources to evaluate the immediate impact of chemical bans and restrictions. In partnership with the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), DAEC aims to proactively identify mission, environmental, safety, and supply chain risks related to ECs.
This report delves into these tools, examines the global scrutiny of chemicals, and explores the implications of EC restrictions for the DoD. Additionally, this report will review the ongoing challenges, opportunities for innovation, and strategies for mitigating the impact of ECs on the military's operational capabilities.
