Economic Implications of Healthcare Policies

Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield recently announced a policy that has sparked considerable debate. Set to take effect on February 1, 2025, in Connecticut, New York, and Missouri, the policy introduces time limits on anesthesia coverage for surgeries and procedures, aimed at standardizing care and managing costs. By capping payments for anesthesia that exceeds pre-set time thresholds based on CMS guidelines, the insurer hopes to reduce expenses.
However, this approach has not been met without resistance. Key stakeholders, including healthcare professionals and the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), have voiced strong opposition. The ASA argues that imposing such time limits compels anesthesiologists to rush or curtail essential care, potentially jeopardizing patient safety and undermining the quality of medical services.
